Organisation of the Year: West Moor Residents Association

The Association has been in existence for 50 years, having originally formed to run Christmas pantomimes and the occasional social event. Since 2000 their role within the community developed to include organising summer play scheme and family outings, and after many years of discussion with North Tyneside Council, the association took on the lease and responsibility of running the West Moor Community Centre in 2007 and have been providing community activities and events ever since. Drew Gransbury, who made the nomination said: “I believe that the Association and the Community Centre is a beacon within the area. The activities that take place cater for people of all ages, from baby cafés and toddler groups to lunch clubs and carpet bowls sessions. They work in partnership with other organisations such as Age UK, Social Prescribing, Care and Connect and the NHS, and at a time when services are being cut across the area, they have stepped up and organised sessions including youth clubs for 8 to 14 year olds and GP referral fitness classes.” Drew concludes by saying: “The Association is there for the community, whether it’s in the form of the activities they run or as a place that people can go to for help or advice. I believe they should be recognised not just for that they have done over the past 12 months, but for the past 40+ years too.”
