Volunteer Leader

1st Shiremoor Scout Group offer young people aged 6 to 14 years old from the areas surrounding Holystone, Shiremoor, West Allotment and Backworth the opportunities to build confidence and self-esteem, learn important life and leadership skills, team building, outdoor adventure, and have lots of fun!

• Beavers 6 -8 year olds

• Cubs 8 – 10½ year olds

• Scouts 10½ year olds

As a volunteer you will assist in the planning and delivery of a safe, exciting and stimulating programme of activities for the Section you are volunteering in taking into account the needs, interests and abilities of the young people, ensuring its safe delivery in accordance with the Policy, Organisation and Rules of The Scout Association.

Activities involve the young people stepping outside their comfort zone, trying out something they wouldn't normally be interested in, taking the lead on something that scares them.  Along the way you will be unlocking hidden talents and enabling them to stand tall.  All volunteers are encouraged to join the young people in taking part in the activities.

We would be delighted to hear from any adults who would like to help our Beavers, Cubs or Scouts do the following:

• learn new skills - fire lighting, orienteering and pioneering etc.

• take part in adventurous activities - abseiling, archery, climbing, kayaking and shooting etc.

• play traditional, new and international sports and games

• trying their hand at web design or mastering a craft like woodwork, making something extraordinary from scratch

• volunteer in their local community or learning about an international issue, about exploring the world from your doorstop and making a positive impact.

• go on sleepovers and camps

All volunteers work together and with other adults in the Group to support and promote Group or multi-section activities and events.  They ensure regular opportunities are provided for young people to express their views on the programme and the running of the Section, and that those views are taken into account.

In addition to planning and running the programme volunteers are there to: help and support the young people, monitor behaviour, comfort distressed young people and help shy young people get involved.

About 1st Shiremoor Scout Group

Scouting takes place when young people, in partnership with adults, work together based on the values of Scouting and
- Enjoying what they are doing and having fun
- Taking part in activities indoors and outdoors
- Learning by doing
- Sharing in spiritual reflection
- Taking responsibility and making choices
- Undertaking new and challenging activities
- Making and living by their Promise.

Regardless of who you are - whatever your physical ability - there’s an adventure out there waiting for everyone. In Scouting we help people find it and discover their ‘thing’: from abseiling to archery or coding to performance art.

In Scouting we want to empower more young people to take a stand. To raise their voices and stand tall, closing the gaps between people and generations. Most importantly, we want to gift them with the confidence and skills they need to recognise their ability and go out in the world blazing a trail.

What skills do I need?

Teamwork, friendly and approachable.

No Scouting experience necessary but an interest in working with children and young people would be beneficial.
