Café Assistant
Opportunity to learn Barista and other catering related skills, which can be transferable to other opportunities in the future. Chance to contribute to a local heritage and community space. Hours can be flexible to suit, including weekends.
Main Responsibilities:
- Offer a warm and friendly welcome to customers
- Serving food and drink promptly and efficiently and clearing tables in a timely manner
- Liaising with the catering manager as necessary, to ensure there is sufficient food on display for sale and maintaining displays presentable throughout the day
- Loading and unloading the dishwasher
- Keeping the café clean, tidy and presentable to visitors
- Becoming familiar with following food hygiene and cafe policy and procedures
- Assisting with the end of day procedures, including wiping down surfaces, storing stock and collecting rubbish
- Becoming familiar with and following the Old Low Light Heritage Centre Health and Safety Policy at all times
Additional Responsibilities could also include:
- Assisting with the taking of orders for food and drink (and shop sales), operating the café till and handling cash
- Ensuring that orders are taken efficiently and that orders are fulfilled as promptly as possible
- Assisting with some basic food preparation (e.g. toasting sandwiches, teacakes, scones; plating up cakes and tray bakes; operating the panini machine). Full training provided
- Operating the coffee machine and preparing the full range of drinks offered on the menu. Full training provided
- Serving alcoholic beverages
- Assisting with the catering at special events (e.g. helping set up buffet, preparing flasks etc.)
About The Old Low Light Heritage Centre
The Old Low Light Heritage Centre is a community space and gallery dedicated to telling the story of North Shields and its heritage through learning, exhibitions and events.
What skills do I need?
Good communication, an outgoing personality and a willingness to learn new skills. No formal qualifications required, previous experience in a café environment would be good, but not essential as training will be given.
This role will suit you if you are:
- Someone who enjoys variety, likes meeting people, has a friendly and helpful nature and likes being part of a small team
- Looking for a new challenge and would love to come and get stuck in within a friendly team
- Someone who is good at keeping a cool head under pressure and is well organised and methodical
- Someone who is cheery and positive and able to provide a warm and friendly welcome for our visitors and help them make the most out of their visit to the Old Low Light café
- Someone who enjoys helping to make people happy and enjoys seeing happy, satisfied customers
