Family Friend
The Family Friend role is very flexible and allows volunteers to offer support according to their skills, interests, availability and preferences. Family Friend volunteers will come alongside parents, carers and/or children in their day to day lives. It may be offering parenting support to struggling parents, taking children out to engage in local activities or simply offering support and encouragement to families that are going through a difficult time. Support usually takes place on a fortnightly basis, for a couple of hours, for 4-6 months. Upon applying, Family Friends will be trained, equipped and supported through our Safer Recruitment Process before they are introduced to any families.
About Safe Families for Children
Safe Families for Children (Safe Families) works hand-in-hand with children’s services to link families in need with local volunteers who can offer them help and support.
When a crisis strikes a family with children, its effects can be devastating. Many of us would turn to relatives and friends for support but some families can be really isolated with nobody there to help them. Stabilising families before they reach a breaking point is key to reducing the number of children who need to go into care. An award-winning charity, Safe Families has benefitted over 6000 children since it was launched in the UK in 2013
What skills do I need?
Our Family Friends come from a variety of backgrounds. Some experience with children is desirable but no qualifications are necessary as we train and equip all our Family Friends. We match Family Friend volunteers to families based on the skills, experiences and preferences of the volunteer so as volunteers never feel out of their comfort zone.
