New volunteering roles at the British Heart Foundation North Shields

The North Shields branch of the British Heart Foundation is currently recruiting volunteers to two roles:

Customer Services

Do you like to chat? Are you friendly and welcoming? The British Heart Foundation is looking for someone to join its friendly volunteer team at British Heart Foundation North Shields. No experience is necessary as full training and support is provided. The role is based in our busy central shop and includes:

  • Operating the till
  • Greeting customers
  • Chatting to customers providing guidance if needed
  • Promoting volunteering and BHF events to customers in the shop

This is a perfect opportunity for anyone wanting to gain retail experience, meet new people or just do something great with their spare time.

Stock Room Star

Do you love fashion? The British Heart Foundation is looking for someone to help behind the scenes in its busy stockroom. They receive donations on a daily basis of clothes and shoes which need to be sorted and prepared before they can be displayed on the shop floor. This is an interesting and crucial role in the shop and involves:

  • Preparing clothes for shop floor
  • Steaming clothes
  • Tagging clothes
  • Rotating stock on shop floor

This volunteer role would be perfect for someone who wants to gain retail experience, meet new people, learn new skills or who just wants to do something great with their spare time.

For more information about either of these roles contact Susan Dinning on 0191 259 6089 or email N18@bhf.org.uk

Volunteers wanted to help people with their Universal Credit applications

Volunteers from VODA’s SAINT (Social Action in North Tyneside) project are supporting local people with their Universal Credit applications now that the new benefit is being rolled out in North Tyneside.

Universal Credit is a working age benefit. This means it is payable from 18 years up to Pension Credit qualifying age. It can also be paid to 16 and 17-year olds in limited circumstances. To date, Universal Credit has only been available to single claimants but from 2 May 2018 it has become available in North Tyneside to couples and families making a new claim for certain benefits.

Due to this being a new benefit system, and the fact that all applications need to be made online, a number of individuals are facing difficulty completing their applications. SAINT volunteers have been supporting those who access The Citizens Advice Bureau in North Shields for Universal Credit advice to make their online applications.

We are currently looking for more volunteers to get involved and help people overcome the barriers to claiming Universal Credit. The volunteers currently meet on Thursdays between 10am and 1pm – training is provided but please note, a good level of IT skills is essential to this role.

Download the full volunteer role description for more information or contact Josie Robinson at VODA for further details.

Volunteering opportunity: Could you make a real and positive difference to a child’s life?

Could you make a difference and befriend a child or young person living in care?

Do you have 6-8 hours a month to spare on an evening or weekend when you could spend time with a young person?

North Tyneside Council’s Participation, Advocacy and Engagement Team are currently looking for volunteers to be Independent Visitors for children in care in North Tyneside.  The scheme involves being matched with a young person who is currently in the care system, including children placed in North Tyneside and in neighbouring authorities. The scheme is designed so you meet the young person on a regular basis to do activities you both enjoy and hopefully build up a positive relationship. This can be anything from supporting the young person to join a sports team, seeing films at the cinema, cycling, bowling or dog walking.

Download an Independent Visitor Application Form for more information and to apply for this role or email advocacy@northtyneside.gov.uk for more information.
