Ryan was nominated by the staff at Phoenix Detached Youth Project (PYDP), a registered charity which works with 13 to 25 year olds in the five main areas of Meadowell, Percy Main, East Howdon, Royal Quays and Chirton, supporting them to develop their ideas, life choices and education. Ryan has been involved with PDYP since the age of 12, and since then has gone on to stay involved in the work of the Project, introducing over 25 young people directly to the service and being instrumental in setting up a group called the NE29ers who all had an interest in skating and scootering at the local skate park. Manager of PDYP, Mike Burgess MBE, who nominated Ryan, said:

“Ryan is a very kind and caring person who has been instrumental in inspiring other young people and groups, leading the planning and organising of young person led activity… He is a keen volunteer and has assisted on our Street Jams and skate park events, helping to set and clear up as well as the planning and running of these events. Alongside the £68,000 he helped raise for the skate park, he has also raised over £1,000 towards activities including residentials and outward bound trips. Ryan is now one of the young ambassadors for the Phoenix Detached Youth Project: he was chosen for this role as a result of the amazing amount of time and energy he spent working in the Phoenix Bowl project over a four-year period. Ryan is an exceptional volunteer and young person who has achieved through his acts of kindness and consideration for others.”
