National Hate Crime Awareness Week runs from 10 to 17 October. It is a national campaign dedicated to raising awareness, supporting victims, and encouraging people to speak out against hate.

A hate crime is any incident where someone is targeted because of their race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or transgender identity. This can range from verbal abuse, threats, and online harassment to physical assault and criminal damage.

How to Report a Hate Crime

If you think you or someone you know has suffered a Hate Crime, call the police on 101 ext 69191 or report it via the Northumbria Police website.

Where to Find Help Locally

The Connected Voice Hate Crime Advocacy Service offers free, independent, and confidential support. You do not have to report the incident to the police to get help.

An advocate can help you:

  • Understand your options and rights
  • Access practical support to feel safe
  • Connect with other local specialist services
  • Guide you step-by-step through the reporting process if you decide to report

Monthly Drop-In Session

Connected Voice Advocacy and Northumbria Police also host a monthly Hate Crime Reporting Drop-In at the ONE Centre in Pelaw.

Held on the third Monday of every month from 10am to 1pm, it provides a quiet, informal space to ask questions, chat with someone in confidence, or get advice.
