Racial Diversity UK Fund

The Nuffield Foundation’s Racial Diversity UK Fund supports research that improves understanding of racial inequality and helps shape policy and practice across the UK.

The fund offers grants to charities, researchers, academics and other organisations working to explore issues of racial diversity, discrimination and inclusion. It focuses on research that strengthens evidence, informs public debate and contributes to building a fairer and more inclusive society.

This programme forms part of a wider commitment to invest £8 million in research between 2025 and 2029.

Funding available

Grants range from £15,000 to £500,000 and typically support projects lasting between six months and three years.

Funding can support a range of research activity, including applied and participatory approaches, and partnerships between organisations and communities.

Priority theme

The theme for the current round is intergenerational changes, continuities and challenges in a racially diverse UK.

This includes exploring how experiences, identities and opportunities are shaped across generations, and how the UK’s colonial past continues to influence outcomes today. Areas of interest include belonging and identity, life chances, civic participation and wider social and economic experiences.

Priorities and approach

The fund prioritises research that:

  • Improves understanding of racial inequalities and their causes
  • Identifies effective approaches to reducing disparities
  • Explores both the challenges and opportunities of a diverse society
  • Brings together research expertise and lived experience

Applications from racially minoritised individuals and organisations are strongly encouraged, along with partnership projects that work closely with affected communities.

Eligibility

The fund is open to charities, academic institutions and other organisations with expertise in research and analysis. Collaborative applications are welcomed.

Key date

  • Application deadline: 5 October 2026
