Bernard Sunley Foundation

The Bernard Sunley Foundation provides one‑off capital grants to registered charities, Charitable Incorporated Organisations (CIOs), and certain exempt groups in England and Wales. Its funding supports projects that improve quality of life and opportunities for young people, older adults, disabled people, and others facing disadvantage.

Grant amounts
Grants are offered at three levels:

  • Small grants: up to £5,000

  • Medium grants: up to £20,000

  • Large grants: £20,000 and above

Funding is awarded based on the scale and impact of the project. The Foundation usually contributes part of the funding rather than covering all costs.

What we fund
Capital grants can support:

  • Construction, refurbishment, or extension of community buildings and recreational facilities

  • Vehicles such as minibuses that provide vital services

  • Facilities for schools, care homes, hospices, and day centres

  • Community spaces, including youth clubs, village halls, and outdoor centres

  • Projects that benefit veterans, older adults, people with disabilities, and other groups facing social or economic disadvantage

How to apply
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Charities must complete an eligibility check and application form online. Applications should clearly show how the project aligns with the Foundation’s aims and the positive impact it will have on communities.
