National Lottery Guidance: Using AI in Funding Applications

The National Lottery Community Fund has released new guidance to help applicants understand how to use artificial intelligence tools appropriately when preparing funding bids.

The Fund notes that AI can support early idea development or help draft initial text. However, applicants are reminded that funding decisions are based on the clarity, accuracy and authenticity of the information provided. Applications must reflect the organisation’s own work, community need and intended outcomes, rather than generic content generated by a tool.

The guidance also explains that AI can sometimes produce inaccurate or misleading information, so applicants should review every section carefully before submitting. Anyone using AI is encouraged to check facts, ensure examples are accurate and relevant, and avoid sharing sensitive or personal data with external tools.

This new advice forms part of the Fund’s wider “Preparing your application” support and aims to help groups produce strong, reliable applications that genuinely reflect their work.
