NT LIFE Recovery College Wellbeing Session with Independent Advocacy North East (IANE)

NT LIFE Recovery College Wellbeing Session with Independent Advocacy North East (IANE) – 11th September 2024 by Ali Donkin

I had the pleasure of delivering a lunchtime wellbeing session to the fantastic team at Independent Advocacy North East (IANE). For those unfamiliar, IANE ensures the voices of vulnerable people are heard, providing vital advocacy services tailored to individual needs. They help people express their views, explore options, and engage in decision-making processes, all while promoting health and self-determination.

It was wonderful to see this ethos of well-being extended to their staff. After a warm welcome, we began by discussing various self-care tools, starting with a reflection on everything the team had already achieved that day. Their dedication was clear, with many so focused on their work they hadn’t even paused for a mindful break! This led perfectly into a conversation about how self-care isn’t just about big gestures like spa weekends or holidays—though lovely, they can wear off quickly—but about the accumulation of small, regular moments throughout the day.

We explored the S.T.O.P. technique: Stop, Take a breath, Observe how you’re feeling (both mentally and physically), and Proceed with a small action to improve how you feel, whether it’s stretching, breathing deeply, or simply having a glass of water.

The session covered practical tips for hydration, healthy eating, movement, breathing exercises, stretching, and better sleep—simple, accessible ways to care for ourselves throughout the day. It’s all about incorporating well-being into our daily routines, rather than waiting for those rare, big restorative moments.

IANE described the session as “enlightening” and full of “fabulous information.” It’s always rewarding to receive such positive feedback, especially from people so passionate about the work they do. In sectors where the focus is on helping others, it’s vital that staff also look after their own well-being.

NT LIFE Recovery College is always happy to offer these sessions, so if your organisation would like a Lunchtime Toolbox Talk on Self-Care, please contact me at ali.donkin@voda.org.uk.

A huge thank you to the wonderful staff at IANE for their hospitality, enthusiasm, and participation!
