Welcoming New Trustees: Five Practical Tips for a Strong Start

Welcome letters pinned on board

As the new year gets underway, our latest Governance Blog focuses on an important but sometimes overlooked aspect of good governance: giving new trustees a genuinely warm and supportive welcome.

Why does this matter? Trustees who feel valued and well supported from the outset are far more likely to stay engaged and contribute effectively. Putting the same care into welcome and induction as into recruitment helps organisations get the best from their board, right from the start.

So how can this be done simply and effectively? Here are five practical tips.

Match them with a buddy
Pair each new trustee with an experienced board member. Regular catch-ups, ideally before and after board meetings during the first year, can help them understand papers, processes and how to raise questions.

Hold a meet and greet
Introduce new trustees to key people such as the CEO, managers, staff, fellow trustees and, where appropriate, service users. This helps build understanding of the organisation and its work.

Ask what they need
Everyone’s circumstances are different. Small adjustments, such as offering online attendance or keeping to meeting end times, can make a real difference.

Explain expenses clearly
Ensure trustees understand how to claim expenses and promote a culture where claiming is normal and accepted.

Prepare an induction pack
Provide a simple pack that includes your governing document, key policies, code of conduct, and The Essential Trustee (CC3) guidance.

If you need further support with trustee induction, contact VODA’s Core Services Team on 0191 323 2040 or email development@voda.org.uk.
