For those people curious about the role of the trustee, in our latest issue of the Governance Blog, we are highlighting a recent Charity Commission post setting out how you can take your first steps into trusteeship and why you might want to: What is a trustee and how do you become one? – Charity Commission

So, what is a trustee? Trustees are volunteers who lead charities and decide how they are run. Trustees are legally and financially responsible for an organisation. They carry out a range of roles and duties to ensure that their organisation runs well. They can be described as board members, committee members, directors or governors. People from all backgrounds can become trustees-you don’t need specific qualifications.

Why would I want to take on this role?

There are so many reasons, but here are three top ones:

  • A chance to contribute to a cause you believe in;
  • The opportunity to meet new people and create new networks;
  • To develop skills in areas such as leadership, finance, decision-making, and public speaking.

How can I find out more?

You can learn more about the role of the trustee on our website here: Support for Trustees – VODAWe also run a quarterly, free in-person training session on trustee roles and responsibilities, designed to help both new and experienced trustees. You can view and book upcoming sessions in our calendar here: VODA Training Calendar

I’m ready to apply-how do I find a vacancy?

VODA also advertises a range of trustee vacancies on our website here: Trustee Vacancies – VODA. Why not take a look and see if you might be the right person for the role?

If you would like to discuss further the possibility of becoming a trustee, then please contact our Core Services Team for advice by telephone on 0191 323 2040 or by email at development@voda.org.uk.
