10 Top Tips for Nominating for the VODA Awards

Each year, the VCSE Awards shine a light on the people and organisations who make North Tyneside a better place. We know there are many inspiring stories out there – but sometimes the nominations don’t capture the full picture.

Here are our 10 top tips to help you write a strong nomination:

  1. Read the category description carefully. Make sure your nomination clearly shows how your nominee fits the criteria.

  2. Be clear about who and why. The judging panel may not know your nominee, so tell their story in a way that brings them to life.

  3. Give enough detail. Don’t just say “they’re amazing” – explain what they do and why it matters.

  4. Keep it focused. Clear, straightforward writing is easier to follow than long, complicated sentences.

  5. Show what makes them stand out. Highlight how they go above and beyond, use special skills, or overcome barriers.

  6. Grab attention early. Open with a strong statement about why your nominee deserves recognition, then back it up with examples.

  7. Share the impact. Wherever possible, include results – how many people were helped, money raised, projects delivered, or changes made.

  8. Use stories and examples. Real experiences, quotes, or anecdotes can make your nomination memorable.

  9. Work together. If others want to nominate the same person or group, join forces to create one strong nomination instead of several weaker ones.

  10. Don’t leave it until the last minute. Give yourself time to reflect and add detail – rushed nominations can miss key information.

Follow these tips and you’ll give your nominee the best chance of being recognised for the difference they make.
