Who are Autism Better Together?

Autism Better Together is a peer-led support and friendship group for autistic adults living in North Tyneside. The group was founded in 2022 by Wayne Taylor and Alison Tombs from North Tyneside Council, with the aim of creating a safe, welcoming space for autistic adults to connect and socialise.

They run drop-in sessions at the Oxford Centre, Longbenton, Wallsend Library and the Linskill Centre, North Shields. Find details of all of their sessions on the Autism Better Together Facebook Page.

Each session typically welcomes over 30 attendees.

Getting Started – Help from VODA

The group contacted VODA for support in applying for a Small Sparks Grant from Inclusion North. We helped Autism Better Together to:

  • Set up as a constituted group

  • Open a bank account

  • Train their committee in their roles and responsibilities

  • Resolve early challenges

  • Complete and submit their grant application

Wayne Taylor, the group’s Secretary, said:

“Thank you for all your help and support – we all appreciate it very much. VODA has helped an autistic group when they really needed it, as we couldn’t have done it on our own. Autism Better Together is truly grateful.”

Looking Ahead

With funding in place, the group is planning a busy 2025, offering members a range of activities based on what they’ve asked for. As Wayne puts it:

“We just try and make it happen for them.”
