Celebrating Volunteers’ Week: Tips for Organisations

Text - Celebrating Volunteers’ Week: Tips for Organisations - surrounded by coloured stars and lines.

Volunteers’ Week (2-8 June) is a time to celebrate and promote volunteering. It’s a great opportunity for organisations to engage with communities, recognise volunteers, and encourage new involvement.

How to get involved

1. Download Volunteers’ Week Resources

Access a free social media launch pack, certificates, thank-you cards, and event planning tips at volunteersweek.org.  Resources include a tip sheet on planning an event on a budget, printable bunting and tips for hosting an event.

2. Offer Flexible or Virtual Volunteering Opportunities

With many people leading busy lives, flexible volunteering options can be very appealing. During Volunteers’ Week, offer opportunities for virtual volunteering or shorter, one-time activities. This allows potential volunteers to experience your organisation without a long-term commitment. South West Museums offers some useful tips on hosting volunteer open days here

3. Promote Volunteer Opportunities

Use Volunteers’ Week to highlight opportunities within your organisation. Whether you need long-term volunteers or help with a specific project, this is a great time to reach new people. Consider:

  • Hosting a coffee morning to introduce your roles
  • Using local media and social media to promote opportunities
  • Adding your roles to our volunteer database – get in touch if you’d like support with this (email volunteering@voda.org.uk

4. Host Volunteer Appreciation Events

Volunteers’ Week is about recognising the impact volunteers make. Show your appreciation with a special event, small tokens of gratitude, or simple thank-you messages. Acknowledging their efforts shows appreciation and encourages continued support.  See here for our info sheet on recognising the contribution of volunteers, and here for our info sheet on thanking volunteers

5. Share Volunteer Stories

Personal stories can inspire others to get involved. Highlight the impact volunteers have within your organisation. Share success stories and testimonials from volunteers on your website and social media platforms. The Volunteers’ Week website has a volunteer story template available to download.

6. Engage on Social Media

Maximise your reach by using social media throughout Volunteers’ Week:

  • Use the hashtag #VolunteersWeek to join the national conversation
  • Share photos, videos, and appreciation posts about your volunteers
  • Run a “Meet Our Volunteers” campaign to introduce different volunteers each day

7. Encourage Individuals to Get Involved

If people are interested in volunteering, guide them to opportunities:
