There was national recognition for North Tyneside this weekend as Crawford Park Lawn Bowls Club in Monkseaton, Whitley Bay was named Club of the Year 2025 at the Bowls England National Awards, held in Leicester.
Chosen from more than 2,400 clubs across England, the award celebrates a club that is not only thriving on the green, but making a real difference in its community.
A proud moment for the North East
Collecting the award, Club Secretary Brian Bell said:
“We were humbled and delighted to accept this award on behalf of the club. It is a tremendous honour for both the club and the North East considering there are over 2,400 clubs throughout England.”
Founded over 70 years ago, the club is based on Seatonville Road in Monkseaton. While small in size, it has shown real ambition and energy in recent years.
Growing, welcoming and inclusive
Crawford Park has transformed its membership in recent years, creating a welcoming environment for people of all ages and backgrounds.

Practical improvements to make the club more accessible
Through determined fundraising, the club has upgraded its facilities, installing a disabled toilet and access ramp to ensure more people can take part.
David Bolt from the Bowls Development Alliance described Crawford Park as:
“Crawford Park has been recognised as an ideal candidate for the Bowls Development Alliance Community Club programme and stands as a beacon of innovation, inclusivity, and community spirit – driving participation locally and inspiring clubs nationally.”
An exciting future for lawn bowls
The timing of the award is particularly fitting. Lawn bowls will feature at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and at the 2027 World Cup in 2027, bringing fresh attention to the sport.
Clubs like Crawford Park are helping to build that momentum at grassroots level.
