Emergency Contacts Over the Christmas Period

The Christmas season can bring extra challenges, and it’s important to know where to turn for support. Below is a list of key contacts for medical, mental health, housing and other urgent needs across North Tyneside and the UK.

Medical Support

  • NHS 111 – For non-emergency medical advice or urgent mental health support, call 111 (24/7).
  • Emergency Services – Dial 999 for life-threatening emergencies only.

North Tyneside Council Support

For urgent issues like money, food, homelessness, safeguarding or major house repairs:

  • Adult & Children’s Social Care Services: Call (0191) 643 2777 (Office hours).
  • Out-of-Hours Team: 0330 333 7475 (weekends and public holidays).

Mental Health Support

  • NHS Mental Health Crisis Resolution Team: 0800 652 2861 / 0303 123 1146 (24/7). Immediate NHS support for anyone experiencing a mental health crisis.
  • Samaritans: Free, confidential emotional support, available 24/7. Call 116 123.
  • CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably): Provides support for anyone experiencing suicidal thoughts or struggling with mental health. Call 0800 58 58 58 (5pm-midnight) or use their webchat.
  • PAPYRUS (Young Suicide Prevention): Support for young people under 35 experiencing suicidal thoughts. Call 0800 068 4141 (9am-midnight), text 07860039967, or email pat@papyrus-uk.org.
  • SANEline: Mental health support for individuals or carers. Call 0300 304 7000 (4:30pm-10pm daily).
  • Rethink Mental Illness: Free advice and support for anyone struggling with mental health. Call 0808 801 0525 (24/7).

Support for Children and Older People

  • Childline: A free, confidential helpline for children and young people. Call 0800 1111 (24/7) or visit childline.org.uk.
  • The Silver Line (Age UK): Providing conversation, support, and friendship for older adults. Call 0800 4 70 80 90 (24/7).

Housing and Domestic Abuse Support

  • Shelter: For urgent housing advice or homelessness support, call 0808 800 4444.
  • National Domestic Abuse Helpline: Free, confidential support for anyone experiencing domestic abuse. Call 0808 2000 247 (24/7).

Financial and Food Support

  • Help through Hardship (Trussell Trust & Citizens Advice): For urgent help with food parcels, energy vouchers, or financial advice, call 0808 208 2138 (Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm).
  • North Tyneside Council Out-of-Hours Team: For food or money crises when other services are closed, call 0330 333 7475.

Power and Energy Support

  • Priority Services Register: Contact your energy provider to ensure your household is prioritised and reconnected during power cuts.
