How Good Neighbours Helps Brian Stay Independent

Brian* has always led an active life. A retired chef, he worked in hotels across several countries before finishing his career in industrial catering. He was also a keen walker and a member of the Ramblers Association for more than 30 years.

In 2019, Brian began experiencing mobility problems after a nerve blockage was discovered in his spine. As his condition worsened, everyday tasks became more challenging, including doing his weekly shop.

Living alone in Wallsend, Brian was finding it increasingly difficult to get to the shops and manage the practicalities of shopping independently. Last year, he was introduced to the Good Neighbours shopping service.

“I was finding it hard to go out to shop. I could manage initially by holding on to a trolley, but my mobility was just getting worse and worse, and I was starting to really struggle.”

Good Neighbours volunteers now support Brian with his shopping, collecting items on his behalf and helping him continue to live independently at home.

“The help I get from Good Neighbours is just excellent. Without them I wouldn’t be able to get my shopping. The volunteers are just spot on and do a really good job.”

For Brian, the service is about more than picking up groceries. The care and attention shown by volunteers helps ensure he gets exactly what he needs each week.

“It’s little touches as well; if a shop doesn’t have something on my list, the volunteer will call to ask if I would like an alternative or something else, which I really appreciate.”

The support has become an important part of Brian’s routine, helping him stay on top of everyday essentials while remaining connected to his local community.

“It has made a huge difference for my day-to-day life, and I simply can’t do without them. The volunteers are very friendly and helpful people who are nice to talk to.”

Brian regularly recommends the service to others and is full of praise for the volunteers who support him.

“I tell my friends all about the service and how the volunteers do such a fantastic job. I would recommend the service to anyone who is thinking about getting help themselves.”
