The Hadrian Trust offers grants to social welfare and charitable organisations working to improve the quality of life for people across the North East of England (the historic counties of Northumberland and Durham, including Tyne & Wear and Cleveland north of the Tees).
Grants are typically £500–£2,000, supporting running costs, project costs, part salaries and basic equipment.
What They Fund
Projects can be funded under the following categories:
- Social Welfare – support for disadvantaged people, debt advice, community centres, homelessness, hospices, and work with offenders/ex‑offenders.
- Youth – initiatives improving young people’s skills, potential and employability.
- Disabled or Older people – reducing isolation, promoting independence and offering educational, social and leisure opportunities.
- People from ethnic backgrounds – projects promoting equality, integration and inclusion.
- Environment – community environmental improvements and outdoor activities.
- Education – learning opportunities for all ages, particularly for those who may not usually access education.
- The Arts – community‑based arts activities that build cohesion and engagement.
Restrictions
The Trust does not fund:
- Major capital building improvements
- Repairs to buildings used solely for worship
- Animal charities
- Organisations outside the area of benefit
- Medical research
- National charities without a North East base
- Individuals (except through referral to the Greggs Foundation Individuals in Need Fund)
Deadlines
Trustees meet quarterly—usually January, April, July and October.
Applications should be submitted at least three weeks before a meeting. Late postal applications are not accepted. Online submissions are encouraged.
