Mayor’s Opportunity Fund

Charities and voluntary organisations working with people aged 65 and over in Tyne & Wear can now apply for grants of £5,000 to £10,000 through the North East Combined Authority Mayor’s Opportunity Fund.

This third round of funding is delivered by Community Foundation North East, in partnership with Point North and the North East Combined Authority (NECA), and will invest £225,000 in small charities and community groups across the region. The Fund supports age-friendly community projects that help older people remain independent, active and connected for longer.

Who can apply?

Applications are open to constituted community groups and charitable, not-for-profit organisations with an annual income under £500,000, delivering activity in Tyne & Wear.

Priority will be given to organisations working in areas of higher social and economic disadvantage, including those supporting women, disabled people, and people from Black, Asian and minoritised ethnic backgrounds.

What can the funding be used for?

Grants can support core or project costs for new or existing activity, over a period of up to 12 months. Projects must clearly show how they will support older people to stay independent and active.

Examples include:

  • Reducing social isolation and improving mental health

  • Digital inclusion and skills

  • Community transport and outdoor activity

  • Dementia-focused projects

  • Intergenerational and bereavement support

  • Projects led by and for older people

Applications for equipment and capital costs will be considered where they support the aims of the Fund.

Support with applying

Community Foundation North East is running a free webinar for organisations in Tyne & Wear and Northumberland on 26 January, 12pm–1pm, covering eligibility and how to apply.

Key dates

  • Application deadline: Friday 27 February 2026
