Wallsend Memorial Hall & Peoples Centre Recruitment Advert for new Trustees Wallsend Memorial Hall is a Grade II listed 3 storey building located within Wallsend Town Centre. It was built after the end of the First World War, commissioned by Sir George Burton Hunter, as a legacy for the people of Wallsend many of whom worked within the local Swan Hunter shipyards. On opening, a charity was set up to run the premises for the benefit of the people of Wallsend, with the trustees drawn from local people and organisations.

The original charity has evolved over the years eventually merging with the People’s Centre whom became tenants within the building leading to the creation of Wallsend Memorial Hall and People’s Centre in January 2011. This brought a ‘people’ dimension to the organisation alongside the heritage aspect of the building and the Memorial Hall continues to provide access to social, educational and cultural opportunities for the people of Wallsend to this day. The building is now approaching its centenary year (2025) and is at a pivotal point within its lifespan. After surviving near closure during the past decade the Board of Trustees are now looking to reinvigorate the building in preparation for the centenary year celebrations. The charity is looking to recruit to its Board of Trustees, to help develop and then deliver a clear strategic plan in the revitalisation of its business planning processes aimed at driving the building forward for the next 100 years.

The building remains a fundamental point within the town centre and provides a range of community services aimed at helping and supporting the most vulnerable residents; and the charity is still operating effectively despite the challenges presented over the past two years. The vision is to create an anchor hub within the community, as envisaged back in 1925, a place recognised by the community as somewhere they can reach out to for help and support , receive and deliver services or just to enjoy and spend leisure time.

Wallsend Memorial Hall underwent a £1.4 million restoration back in 2012 where the interior of the building received significant improvements.
