Why Supporting Women Matters
“There is no greater pillar of stability than a strong, free, and educated woman and there is no more inspiring act than to stand beside her, volunteer your time, and help her get there.” Angelina Jolie
Supporting women and girls through volunteering is a powerful way to help build a more equal and compassionate society. Many organisations work to empower women, whether that’s through mentoring, campaigning for rights, providing emotional support, or giving them the tools to succeed. There are many ways to help women and to get involved in volunteering. Here are some incredible opportunities to get involved, learn new skills and make a difference.
Ways to Volunteer
Volunteering to support women isn’t just about helping others, it’s about being part of a movement that uplifts communities, challenges inequalities and creates a more inclusive future for everyone. Here are some great opportunities.
- BestStart peer support – A North Tyneside-based project led by VODA, helping new parents build confidence and reduce isolation, with a focus on breastfeeding.
- SmartWorks – Supports women preparing for job interviews by offering coaching and professional clothing. Volunteers help boost confidence and readiness.
- The Girls’ Network – Matches teenage girls from disadvantaged backgrounds with professional female mentors. It’s a chance to be a positive role model and help build confidence.
- Level Up – A feminist campaign group tackling domestic abuse and misogyny in the media through activism and digital campaigns.
- Girl Guides – Offers a safe space for girls to have fun, learn new skills and grow into confident young women. Volunteers run weekly groups and activities to help girls reach their potential.
- Give your Best – An online shop where refugee women and other people in need can choose donated clothing with dignity. Volunteers help with photography, digital tasks and outreach.
- Women’s Aid – A national organisation working to end domestic abuse. Volunteers help raise awareness, influence policy and create lasting change.
- Rape Crisis – Supporting survivors of sexual violence requires compassion, strength, and training — all of which Rape Crisis provides to their volunteers. Whether you help on the helpline or via email, your time could be a lifeline for someone in need.
- Rights of Women – Provides free legal advice on family law, immigration and domestic violence. Volunteers with legal expertise are especially welcome.
- TechStart – A North East-based CIC empowering women and young people from under-served communities to thrive in tech.
Why It Matters
Volunteering to support women promotes gender equality, helps women access vital resources, amplifies their voices, strengthens communities and drives long-term social change. Even small actions, such as mentoring, advocacy, organising, or offering professional skills, can make a big difference in the lives of women and girls.
