Gardening Volunteers
We are hoping to recruit some green-fingered volunteers who can support the maintenance and development of our beautiful outdoor spaces at St Oswald's. Volunteers will be involved in a variety of practical gardening tasks, and can discuss the weekdays and times that suit them. This role will suit someone with a keen interest, as well as some gardening knowledge and experience.
Our Gardening Volunteers help to maintain and develop our Hospice garden spaces, to ensure that they are safe and welcoming places for our patients and their families to enjoy. Volunteers help with lawn and shrub maintenance; planting and weeding; composting; watering; and a variety of other horticultural tasks as needed across mixed shrub and herbaceous borders, raised beds and planters, lawns, hedges, trees, pathways, a children's play garden and a variety of courtyard gardens. There are also opportunities to contribute to the development of our gardens.
We will also have groundskeeping tasks available if volunteers would like to get involved with these instead/as well. Main Tasks: grass cutting; keeping grounds clear; hedge trimming; and leaf and litter picking.
The Gardening Volunteer roles are flexible depending on a volunteer's availability. Days and times flexible, Monday to Friday (anytime during the hours 10am – 3pm approx.) The role is based at our main Hospice site in Gosforth.
What skills do I need?
The skills and qualities we are looking for are gardening experience and gardening knowledge; an enthusiastic and flexible approach to volunteering; and an ability to work independently as well as part of a team. An ability to carry out tasks that involve occasional heavy manual handling/strenuous tasks is beneficial, however it is not essential for the role.
All of our volunteers also need to have an ability to model our values as outlined on our website at https://www.stoswaldsuk.org/who-we-are/our-values-and-people-charter/.
