The shop assistant would help the Shop Manager or Assistant Shop Manager to stock the shop with the donated goods, keep the shop floor tidy and serve customers.
NOTE: Not everyone is comfortable or able to carry out all these duties, this can be determined with the Shop Manager based on skills, preference and physical ability.
Tasks will include:
Serving customers: Working on the till, taking in donations from the general public, completing Gift Aid forms from donations, taking names and addresses for collections and deliveries, dealing with returns and refunds, handling cash and card payments, logging sales of Gift Aided items.
Stocking and Tidying the Shop Floor: Straightening up clothing, bringing goods from the sorting area to the shop, putting goods (bric-a-brac, clothing) out in the correct location, taking off old stock and bagging / boxing accordingly. Specific duties like rotating the stock of books, CDs and DVDs could also be considered.
Sorting Donations: Sorting through the bags of donations received to separate the saleable from the non-saleable items (could include clothing, bric-a-brac, electricals, books etc), storing the items in the designated areas.
Tagging & Steaming Clothing: Taking into consideration stock shortages on the shop floor: collecting the required clothes from the designated areas, attaching a cardboard tag to them, putting on the correct week and size, hanging them and, where required, steaming them so they are presentable for display on the shop floor.
About Veterans at Ease Enterprise Ltd
Veterans at Ease Enterprise Ltd manages two traditional second-hand charity shops within the North East.
Main activities for volunteers would include serving and helping customers, sorting incoming donations, tagging and sizing clothing, steaming clothing, rotating stock as required.
Other, more specialist duties could include: being responsible for the refilling of the books, CDs, DVDs, gift cards; researching prices for items (especially vinyls); assisting the delivery / collection drivers or administration duties (Gateshead only).
What skills do I need?
All training is provided. However, general “soft” skills like confidence for dealing with customers, awareness of good customer service, general awareness etc. are preferable.
Full disabled access for the shop and toilet facilities. Limited access for upstairs area (no lift).
