A great way to connect with others

Volunteering with Action Tutoring is an easy and rewarding way to make a difference to the lives of young people living in your community. By volunteering and tutoring for just one hour a week, you will be able to directly support disadvantaged young people to build their confidence and help ensure they leave school with the grades needed to build a bright future, as well as developing your own skills.

We are currently running both in-school and online English and maths tutoring sessions and are trying to reach more pupils than ever. we recruit volunteers on a rolling basis. Training and resources are provided.

In-school tutoring takes place in line with COVID-19 guidance to schools, with more information provided when you are signed up to tutor at a particular school. Sessions are delivered on the school premises at the same time each week, so the opportunity can flexibly fit around university and busy work schedules.

Online tutoring can take place from your home or workplace. You will need a laptop or desktop computer (a tablet, iPad or phone alone isn't suitable), a good internet connection, webcam, microphone and an address in the UK.

Online tutoring is a great option for anyone on a busy schedule, less able to get to school locations or continuing to keep their distance from groups of people. It has allowed us to expand and recruit tutors from outside of our usual locations.

Through tutoring with us our volunteers are able to develop a wealth of transferable skills that employers love (interpersonal, organisational, communication, instruction and computer skills) whilst making a significant difference. We work with undergraduate and post graduate students and corporations across the UK, plus many of our volunteers are (semi-) retired. Help your community and apply today!

We provide all of our tutors with training and workbooks to use in sessions, and we will also process a DBS check for you. Unlike most tutoring organisations, you’ll have a Programme Coordinator who oversees the programme you tutor on and who is available to support you throughout your tutoring journey.

About Action Tutoring NE

About Action Tutoring NE
We are a national education charity supporting pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds to achieve a meaningful level of academic attainment, helping them to progress to further education, employment or training. To do this, we partner with primary and secondary schools to deliver tutoring programmes in English and maths. We recognise how powerful tutoring can be in supporting a child academically and we believe it shouldn't be accessed only by those who can afford it. So, we empower and support inspirational volunteer tutors, from a whole range of backgrounds, to carry out personalised tutoring programmes to support pupils who otherwise would be unlikely to access such support.

What skills do I need?

We are looking for professionals/students/ retired people who want to support pupils to succeed for 8 to 10 week blocks of tutoring. Through your experiences and help you can inspire and support your pupils’ ambitions. Enthusiasm for learning and a strong understanding the subject you’re tutoring (English or maths) is important, but you don’t have to have studied it at tertiary level. Experience working with young people is helpful but not essential. All volunteers must be willing to undergo a DBS check.

You need to be a fluent English speaker, preferably achieved an A or B at A-Level (or equivalent) in the subject, or similar subject, you are wishing to tutor, but experience is equally applicable. You need to have good communication skills, patience, and be committed and resilient. We do review all qualifications and experience and would encourage you to apply - even if you don't meet the exact criteria
