Volunteer Mentor
Mentoring is an amazing way to share your experience and skills with a girl that might not benefit from this support otherwise. It is also a great way to show a teenage girl that you believe in her, and that she is worth investing time in. This is a powerful combination, and one that we have seen transform the lives of girls and young women again and again. We ask our mentors for a commitment of at least one hour a month, over the course of a year. We work with local schools to identify the girls who need our help the most. The initial commitment is an application form, you would then be invited to attend a 3 hour virtual training session and we would process a enhanced DBS check for you. At that point you would be added to our list of available mentors and sent any matching invites we have available, these could be anywhere across Tyne & Wear and we can't guarantee a school near where you live but wouldn't expect you to travel more than 30-60 minutes for a session. You pick the school you would like to mentor at. Some sessions are scheduled on a specific date but most are independent so you arrange where and when to meet your mentee, always a public place and outside of school hours. Session can also be virtual or in person depending on the preference of your mentee. We have two main matching seasons one in Spring and one in Autumn so depending on when you get trained you may be matched immediately or have to wait until the next season. You can mentor every year or do it once, the choice is yours. You will only ever have one mentee at a time. The kind of topics we ask you to cover would be things like confident communication, becoming and independent woman and being a changemaker and full resources are provided, however we encourage you tailor the sessions to the individual needs of your mentee. Some will know exactly what they want to do after school others won't have any idea and most just want to feel more confident.
What skills do I need?
We are looking for women who have a minimum of three years work experience, who have time and willingness to support a girl from one of the least-advantaged communities and who want to support a girl to overcome obstacles and seize opportunities.

It is crucial to our model that all the mentors are women, to ensure that girls are exposed to and can learn directly from an inspiring woman. At The Girls’ Network we believe that matching girls with mentors who are women is a direct solution to a demonstrable lack of role models who are women in positions of power or influence in public life and in the media. Trans women are women and trans girls are girls. The Girls’ Network vision is one where the barriers that all women and girls face every day are eradicated. We recognise that our network of mentors is strongest when it is diverse and representative of all women’s experiences and backgrounds.
