Volunteer Mentor at Cafe Beam
At Smile For Life, our Volunteer Mentors support young people with learning difficulties and disabilities on work placements in Café Beam. Through these placements we hope to help each young person to develop essential work and life skills, as well as encourage their confidence and independence. We are looking for volunteers to start with us as soon as possible hopefully for one
session on a weekly basis at our second café at Ouseburn Farm.
Responsibilities
• Provide hands on support helping the young people to open and close the café; greet customers; take, prepare and serve orders; receive payment; clear up and wash up; carry out daily cleaning and any other café tasks required.
• Supervise the young people at all times.
• Take a lead on suitably and promptly fixing any issues that may come up in the café and when serving customers.
• Ensure the café runs smoothly.
• Take part in the young people’s reviews, monitoring and providing feedback to staff about their progress.
• Develop positive and healthy working relationships with the young people.
• Encourage the young people’s independence, giving them as many opportunities as appropriate to carry out café tasks without guidance.
• Encourage the young people’s confidence, providing them with positive and constructive feedback as often as possible.
What skills do I need?
Volunteers should be friendly, approachable, patient, flexible and adapt to working in both busy and quiet environments. You must be able to work well in a team, as well as be conscientious and take initiative. You must be able to communicate clearly and effectively with young people who have varied communication needs. It is important that you can build excellent formative relationships with our young people as this is key to their success in the café. Experience working in either hospitality and/or with young people with learning disabilities and autism is an advantage but not required.
