Pam, a retired secretary who has lived in her home in North Tyneside for 56 years, faced many challenges after being diagnosed with cancer in March 2022. Pam, who has lived on her own since the passing of her husband, has limited mobility and multiple health conditions, and while her neighbours have been a big help, Pam has struggled to manage everyday tasks, especially her weekly shopping needs.
After her GP recommended the Good Neighbours service, Pam found a lifeline in volunteer Allison, who has been instrumental in helping her with shopping. Pam’s dependence on her neighbours reduced significantly, and she no longer feels isolated or overwhelmed by her circumstances.
Despite being in remission from cancer, Pam still requires assistance with her day-to-day activities. The Good Neighbours service has proven to be invaluable to her overall well-being.
When asked about her experiences with Good Neighbours, Pam commented: “I would be lost without the project. I can’t get out much. Allison the volunteer is such a lovely lady and nothing is a bother. She is so patient, and kind and we have great chats. She always keeps me right with my needs for shopping. The Good Neighbours project is a godsend. It is not an intrusive service and I get a call every week from the Good Neighbours team to check in on how I am. It’s a nice feeling that someone cares. I would highly recommend the project.”
